Thanksgiving just passed, and can you believe it, we are already at the conclusion of another year! I can’t believe 2014 passed by so quickly. It’s been a whirlwind of new recipes, wines, and a slow moving overhaul of the format of my blog. Next year you will see even more recipe and restaurant reviews, as well as the debut of my very exciting tiffin service! Yes, that is correct- my BFF M* and I will be taking the learnings from our pop-up, and applying it to a brand new home delivery meal kit service.
Through my connection to the lovely L*, a local SF wine buyer, I recently purchased a couple of cases of hard to find wine, and she threw in several bottles of Wild Hog in the case. Wild Hog is a recent discovery of mine, and I’ve loved every single of bottle of wine i’ve tried of theirs. They focus on sustainable, organic methods for the majority of the wines they produce and I love their emphasis on this aspect of wine production. Wine, like many other food products these days, is often mass produced with harmful chemicals and additives, so I try to drink organic and sustainable whenever possible.
The first bottle of Wild Hog I opened was of their Saralee’s Vineyard Pinot Noir, with grapes sourced from Cazadero in the Russian River valley. I served this at a Friendsgiving and it paired excellently with the roast duck I’d prepared. I picked up on notes of cherry, mineral, stone, and spice. The wine had a fairly long finish and was very fruit forward and full bodied for a pinot noir. The bottle was polished off heartily by my guests and several of them asked for more, but alas, L* had given me only one bottle in my case as it is a harder to find wine.
I haven’t seen Wild Hog at my local wine shop or anywhere except restaurants in SF, so if you want to try it, your best bet is probably to visit them or contact them directly. I know I’ll be milking my contact, L* to get my hands on a case of this Pinot Noir before 2014 is over!
