I’ve been celebrating my birthday for 2 weeks now. Yes I said it. 2 weeks of eating, drinking, and tasting life. What did I spend the past several days doing? Hanging out and drinking Bulleit and beer with a hot new friend, biking to Tiburon in crystal clear 80 degree weather, drinking copious amounts of Portuguese wine with lovely Portuguese people, and eating, eating, and more eating. And trying to not gain 1000+ lbs.
To combat expected corpulence, I’ve been working out. A lot. 5 days a week. I’ve tried eating healthier, but I’ve just gotten too many offers to go out to eat for my 30+? birthday. And I generally can’t say no to a good meal. Or good beer, or good anything. So when N* stopped by my place the other day, she asked me if she could take me out for a birthday brunch at Mission Beach Cafe. At 9 am on a Tuesday, there was no wait at all (unlike the weekends) and I strolled in after my 1 minute commute from around the corner. N* is vegetarian so I decided to compromise and get a meat free dish so we could share equally in the gluttony.
I decided to get the huevos rancheros with white beans, salsa, tortilla chips, guacamole, and creme fraiche.
I liked the guacamole and tortilla chips, and I found the sauce tasty…but it was lacking bite. N* and I, being stereotypical desis decided to add hot sauce liberally to the dish. It helped somewhat; I was starving and ate over half of the dish anyways. The texture of the white beans added a nice touch, I will say.
N* ordered the wild mushroom benedict in truffle mornay sauce. It was absolutely delicious. The cook must have been generous with the truffle oil or pieces because the flavor of truffle dominated this dish. The english muffin it was served on was perfectly toasted, and the eggs were cradled by a bed of spinach and a topping of sauteed, fragrant mushrooms. I devoured my half of the dish almost immediately.
The potatoes were also splendid- perfectly crispy and cooked. I was beyond full, but devoured every last bite of the wild mushroom benedict dish. Then we walked back to my block, and I changed. Why? So I could change into my yoga pants and vinyasa flow some of the previous meals’ sins off of my body. After that, rinse and repeat it all over again.
