It was a gorgeous 80 degree day outside and S* and I decided to meet in Berkeley to have brunch. S* had recently been laid off from her torturous job as a corporate lawyer and was celebrating her freedom. We decided to try a brunch place that was usually crowded on a weekend, and started running through the list of good places in the area. I mentioned that in all my years at UC Berkeley, I had never been to La Note. S* was shocked and made an 11 o’clock reservation.
The meal did not disappoint. We got seating in the patio area- which featured a charming garden area and quaint furniture. S* asked me if I was getting a mimosa. I hesitated for a brief moment, and then told her that I would do whatever she did. S* ordered two raspberry mimosas and they were delicious.
We spoke about our future plans. S* had started looking for new lawyering gigs, but was dreading the idea of going back to the confines of the office. “I just want you to open a wine bar, so I can work in it,” sighed S*. I told her I would try to figure something out that would benefit the both of us. We then went on to order the actual food. I opted to get the Cote Est- which featured scrambled eggs, a pancake of my choice, and bacon. I’d heard great things about the oatmeal raspberry pancakes and asked for that to be included in my meal. S*ordered the Cote Sud- the scrambled eggs with sausage and homefries.
I thought the eggs were just as I like them- creamy, slightly soft, and laden with butter. The bacon was thick, salty and chewy- I had a bite of bacon with each mouthful of scrambled eggs I had, and the melding of both flavors created a perfect combination. I have to say I was a little underwhelmed with the raspberry oatmeal pancake. The flavor was good, but it was a tad on the dry side, so I did not end up finishing it. In any case, I was starting to get quite full by that point. S* asked if I wanted another mimosa. “I really shouldn’t,” I protested. But, neither of us were going back to the office that day, so I succumbed and ordered another one of those delicious raspberry mimosas. Life is good.
